Culture Club will help you to stop learning English and start using it.
We judge ourselves on the way we have communicated – did we make a mistake, was the language we used good enough, have we passed or failed? We need to change the way we evaluate ourselves. Ask yourself whether you have communicated your ideas effectively.
Stop looking for errors and ask these questions
- Have they understood my point?
- Did my ideas make sense?
- Was my communication effective?
- Did I achieve what I wanted to?
You will move away from the fear of making mistakes to the joy of feeling confident in your communication. And I will be there at each step of your journey for any language (or emotional!) support you might need.
How does Culture Club work?
Each month we dive into a piece of scottish history. In each 4 week block, there are weekly assignments. In week 2 and 4, we have live discussion sessions. You will have a variety of articles, podcasts, documentaries, and videos to watch, read and listen to. And there is a book group every month related to our topic
Week 1 – Introduction to our topic

- Recording expectations in the class reading journal

- Further reading/listening/viewing on the topic + assignment
Week 2 – discussion week
- Live presentation and discussion on our topic on Wednesday 6.30-7.30pm GMT
- Weekly reading targets
- Reading journal contributions
- Further reading/listening/viewing on the topic + assignment
Week 3 – Digging Deeper
- Study buddy work discussing more detailed aspects and case studies of our topic.
- Weekly reading targets
- Reading journal contributions
- Further reading/listening/viewing on the topic + assignment
Week 4 – Reflections
- Live book group and discussion Wednesday 6.30-7.30pm GMT
- Recording final thoughts on the connections between the book and our topic
- Giving your personal analysis on the issues raised through our discussion
You’ll be doing tasks which are actually useful for real life
Whether you use English for work, travelling, or just for fun! And these tasks will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills without needing to study them explicitly.
Exposure to authentic language improves your English. Fact.
That’s why Culture Club will improve your English. Studies have long shown that exposure to real life English (as opposed to course books) improves your language acquisition. But it can be hard to do it by yourself.
In Culture Club, you get a specially curated selection of authentic language on fascinating topics. You also get accountability! This will motivate you to engage with the materials thanks to assignments and group discussion.
And you get community. Having a great study buddy is one of the best ways to work on your English. The Culture Club community is there to have your back, encourage you, motivate you, and help your each your goals.
How can Culture Club help you protect the investment you’ve made in your English?
- Second language attrition, or the process of slowly forgetting a second language, can happen after a few months of not using it.

Who is Culture Club for?
B1+ learners
The aim of Culture Club is helping you achieve successful communication in English. That applies to whether you have a B1 level or a C2 level of English. We do use authentic materials which can be more challenging, but you are able to work at your own pace.
English Teachers
If you teach English (and speak it as an L2), Culture Club allows you to explore the language, expand your vocabulary, and discover new approaches to teaching English. I’ve worked with lots of English teachers in the past on cultural immersion courses who have said it has inspired and refreshed their teaching
Parents
if you have young children, getting to a regular class is practically impossible. Plus any precious free time you might have shouldn’t be filled with doing grammar exercises! Culture Club allows you to keep your English fresh, use your brain, feel less isolated, and expand your conversations beyond nappies and sleep regressions!
C2 level speakers
If you are one of those amazing human beings who managed to pass the Cambridge Proficiency exam, then this course is for you. It’s the perfect way to keep your English at the level you have invested so much in, challenge yourself with your English, and connect with the language in an exciting and innovative way (with no keyword transformations in sight!).

My courses work on continuous enrollment and are based around a number of units on each course. We always cycle back to the beginning of the course so you will catch up with anything you have missed.
You need to have access to a computer, a reliable internet connection and a Google account, which is free and easy to create. I am happy to help with any technical questions.
I use Google Meet and Google Classroom.
All sessions are recorded, and you will have access to recordings for one month after the end date of the course.
All times mentioned are GMT.
I invoice in pounds; however, payments can be made directly by credit card through my secure online payment service, which will automatically calculate the correct exchange rate.
I ask my students to give us 2 week’s notice if they can no longer continue with their course. I will always send you a reminder asking you to confirm if you are continuing. If you tell me after the 2 week’s notice period, there is a £30 cancellation fee which you can use towards a week of classes.
